Donate Your Junk Car for a Tax Deduction

That non-running car sitting in the driveway is worth more than you think — not as scrap, but as a way to support U.S. veterans and claim a tax deduction. Soul Miners accepts junk cars, dead-battery clunkers, salvage titles, and vehicles that haven't started in years.

What counts as a "junk car"?

If it has a VIN and can be loaded onto a tow truck, there's a good chance we can take it.

Why donate instead of scrapping or selling?

Junk car tax deduction rules

Junk cars usually sell for under $500 at salvage auction. The IRS rule for that range is straightforward: deduct the fair market value up to $500, no Form 1098-C required. Keep your initial pickup receipt and claim it on Schedule A when you itemize. If your junk car somehow sells for more, we send Form 1098-C with the actual gross sale price — your deduction matches that.

How the pickup works

  1. Call 1-800-940-6416 or fill out the form on our homepage.
  2. Describe the vehicle: year, make, model, condition, and where it's parked.
  3. We schedule a free tow, usually within 1–3 business days.
  4. The driver loads the car and hands you a receipt at the curb.
  5. Cancel your registration and insurance once the car is gone.

Do I need a title for a junk car donation?

In many states, yes. Some states allow donations without a title under specific conditions (older vehicles, abandoned status, or with a bill of sale). Call us — we'll walk through your state's rules before scheduling pickup.

Where your junk car money goes

Salvage auction or recycling proceeds fund Soul Miners wellness retreats for veterans living with PTSD, TBI, chronic pain, and isolation. Even a junk car can fund a piece of HEAL · RELAX · CONNECT · RENEW · BROTHERHOOD.

FAQ

Will you really take a car that doesn't run? Yes — non-running, junk, and salvage-title vehicles are routine for us.

How much can I deduct for a junk car donation? Typically up to $500 (fair market value). If it sells for more, you deduct the gross sale price.

Does the car need to be drivable to the tow truck? No — flatbed pickup is included.

What if I owe money on the car? The title must be in your name, free and clear of liens, before donation.
